THE SCIENCE OF RED LIGHT THERAPY
Red and near-infrared light are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in cellular mitochondria. Thousands of peer-reviewed studies document this interaction and the downstream effects on cellular energy production and nitric oxide signaling — it's the most-studied mechanism in photobiomodulation research.
What the research consistently shows: outcomes depend on three inputs — wavelength, irradiance, and verified output. Everything else is downstream of those three.
1. Wavelength
Wavelength determines what absorbs the light. The research clusters in two windows: roughly 600–700nm red, absorbed in skin and surface tissue, and 800–900nm near-infrared, reaching muscle, joint, and connective tissue. Cytochrome c oxidase has absorption peaks within both windows, and our devices are built around them — most of our panels emit peaks at 630nm and 670nm red and 830–850nm near-infrared, with each device's exact peaks published on its product page. One honest note: LEDs emit a peak within a small range, not a single perfect number — any brand claiming otherwise is rounding.
2. Irradiance
Irradiance — mW/cm² — is the photon density actually reaching tissue, and it falls fast with distance. This is where COB (Chip-on-Board) architecture matters: chips bonded to a single substrate deliver dense, uniform output that holds usable irradiance at real sitting distances. Light Labs International, an independent lab, measured our 200W COB at 138.39 mW/cm² at 6 inches and 67.22 mW/cm² at 12 inches — which is why we recommend sessions at 12–24 inches: full output, from outside the device's electromagnetic fields.
3. Verified Output
Specs are only useful if they're real. The Dose-Response Concept
The published research describes photobiomodulation as biphasic — outcomes depend on irradiance, distance, duration, and consistency, and more isn't always better. That's why verified numbers matter: without them, you can't replicate the conditions the studies actually used.

The Light Fusion Principle — Topical First, Then Light
Our founder Kris developed vitiligo at age 3; by 9 it covered his body. The protocol that worked for him was specific in its order: a topical first, then narrowband UVB light. Topical first. Then light. Within two years he was fully repigmented. That sequence — prepare the skin, then light it — is the design principle behind our Light Fusion system.
The sequencing principle shows up across the published research. A 2009 study found that green tea extract applied before 670nm red light produced in one month what light alone took ten months to achieve, with EGCG identified as the active mechanism. And a 2025 network meta-analysis of 27 randomized controlled trials found that phototherapy combined with topical antioxidants ranked first for outcomes — phototherapy alone ranked lowest. The pattern is consistent: light works better when the skin is prepared first.
Light Fusion applies that order, not that medicine. Each sheet mask delivers actives selected for its wavelength — three melanogenesis-pathway ingredients before green 525nm, collagen peptides and Vitamin C before red 630/670nm, eight barrier botanicals before yellow 580nm — formulated at a 13,800 m² botanical farm in Gangwon Province, South Korea. Fifteen minutes under the Light Fusion sheet mask, remove it, then run the matching wavelength on the ETERNO — which hovers 3mm above your skin, so nothing touches your face while the light runs.
Beyond Red — The Full Spectrum
Natural sunlight isn't just red and near-infrared. It carries UVA from sunrise to sunset, which penetrates deeper into the dermis than UVB and has been studied extensively for its interaction with skin cells, melanin biology, and the circadian system. And it carries UVB — where decades of phototherapy research settled specifically on 311nm narrowband, because it delivers the intended biological effect with the least DNA damage of the UVB range. That's the entire logic of narrowband: not more UV, but a precise sliver of it — maximum effect, minimum mutational burden, reduced scatter. Modern indoor life delivers almost none of this spectrum.
Our Krypton line is built to close that gap: red, near-infrared, UVA, and 311nm narrowband UVB in one system, each spectrum on its own independent timer. It's the same wavelength Kris grew up under in his own narrowband UVB sessions — the Krypton borrows that spectrum, and the control to run it deliberately.
The Components — and why we don't make our own
Our Krypton UV systems run genuine bulbs from Philips, the Dutch company that has manufactured phototherapy lamps for decades — imported from their production in Poland: broadband UVA, and narrowband 311nm UVB, the same tubes used in clinical phototherapy units worldwide. Decades of lamp-making show where it matters most: spectral consistency. A tube that says 311nm delivers 311nm — this tube, the next one, and the replacement you buy years from now. And if the entire point of narrowband is precision, a bulb that drifts off 311nm forfeits the exact property the wavelength was chosen for.
Here's the honest part: we could manufacture our own UV bulbs for a fraction of what Philips charges us. We don't, because Kris grew up under these exact bulbs, and his rule hasn't changed: we don't sell anything that didn't work for him first. With UV more than any other light, that consistency is a safety feature, not a luxury.
The same thinking runs through our power electronics. Our PRO series runs Meanwell industrial-grade drivers — the only way to fully eliminate flicker, and they bring the magnetic field down to undetectable. Where a specialist already makes the best component, we buy it rather than build a cheaper one.
The Hardware Behind the Research
Every EMR-TEK panel is built around COB technology. Six of them — the Inferno, Inferno PRO, Firewave, Firewave PRO, Firestorm, and Firestorm PRO — share the same 200W COB chip, the one Light Labs International measured. The Fire Dragon and Fire Dragon PRO run our larger 288W chip, so their irradiance comes in slightly higher; the Firefly runs a 75W COB, slightly lower. We publish a flicker number for every model: 0% on PRO devices with Meanwell drivers, and an independently tested 3.2% on our standard drivers. But here's what matters for either version: the COB chip's high irradiance means your whole session happens at 12 inches or more, and at that distance the electromagnetic fields are below detectable levels. PRO or standard, you're sitting outside them.
